Creating the Dew Character

When I was hired onto the marketing team for the City of Dallas - Water Conservation Department, I found a water mascot in one of the storage closets hidden away in the concrete brutalist master piece of a building designed by I. M. Pei. I was super inspired by this large water drop and started to dig up the history of its creation and other projects associated with it. Dew Drop was created by Irene Core the designer of the infamous Barney the Dinosaur costume in 2001 and had been long retired. The original concept of Dew came from 3 different drawings that children at a local Middle School created, collectively voted, and elected as the City of Dallas’ new mascot. I found some old videos on YouTube from the local news. I loved that the creation of this wisecracking, cool, sunglass & sneaker wearing, skateboarding mascot was conceptualized by children. He was last used over a decade ago and I was on a mission to bring him back to life with selfies, dance off videos, and a witty online persona to get kids stoked about saving water and the impact of their water foot print on the world.
